Herencia de Timbiquí: Fusion and Afro-Colombian Tradition
Herencia de Timbiquí is a Colombian group founded in 2000, comprised of Afro-descendant musicians from Colombia’s Pacific coast. They preserve and promote their rich cultural heritage by blending traditional Pacific sounds with modern genres like jazz, funk, reggae, and salsa. Initially, the group performed native styles like currulao, bunde, juga, arrullos, and bambazú, using typical Pacific instruments such as the chonta marimba, drums, cununos, guasá, and traditional vocal harmonies.
Over time, Herencia de Timbiquí expanded their sound by adding standard orchestra instruments—bass, keyboards, electric guitar, drums, trumpet, and saxophone—creating a unique fusion that maintains their Afro-Colombian roots while embracing a modern urban feel.
Founded by members of the Amu and Carabalí families, who inherited musical knowledge passed down through generations, Herencia de Timbiquí achieved international recognition after winning the Silver Seagull at the Viña del Mar Festival in 2013 with their song “Amanece.” Since then, they’ve performed worldwide, gracing stages in the U.S., Spain, France, Switzerland, and Mexico, bringing the rhythms and traditions of Colombia’s Pacific coast to global audiences.
Today, they are celebrated as ambassadors of the Pacific Colombian culture, captivating diverse audiences with a fusion of tradition and modernity.
